Stealth Storage: How to Discreetly Store and Move Life Size Dolls
A heavy‑duty Z‑rack, duvet trick, and photography staging secrets from a professional user.
When most people first order a life size ZELEX doll, their primary concern is, "Where am I going to put it?" For a 170cm figure that can weigh over 70lbs, "just leaning her in the corner" is not a realistic long term strategy. You need a dedicated, mobile system, especially if you plan on using your doll for serious photography or frequently moving it between rooms.
I struggled with traditional storage ideas until I landed on the perfect solution: A heavy duty, adjustable height Z rack garment rack. Not a cheap closet organizer, but a commercial grade, rolling steel frame with a 400 pound capacity. This single tool solved three major problems for me: mobility, protection, and studio staging.
Mobility and Multi Doll Handling
The defining feature of the Z rack is its strength and wheel placement. The unique 'Z' base makes the rack incredibly stable when loaded. A heavy duty rack can easily support 3 dolls at once.
With my system, I can hang my 170cm dolls (with the rack height adjusted to 71 inches) and move 3 of them all at once. One person can effortlessly roll hundreds of pounds of doll weight from a storage area to a different room, or even around tight corners. The industrial casters glide perfectly on hardwood floors, making logistics simple rather than a workout — though keep in mind that pushing that much weight across carpet will take significantly more effort and won't be nearly as smooth.
Protection and Privacy: The Duvet Trick
Keeping a premium silicone doll dust free is critical, as silicone is a magnet for lint. However, there is also the privacy factor to consider. The easiest and most effective cover I've found for both is a USA king size duvet cover.
Once you have your dolls hanging on the Z rack, you can simply drape a clean duvet cover over the entire assembly. If your cover has buttons, you can button it up at the bottom, or just use some clips to fully enclose the whole setup. This provides 360 degree, non abrasive dust protection, but it also serves as a perfect "plain sight" concealment. To any casual observer, it just looks like a rack of seasonal bedding or clothes. It's a low profile way to keep a collection private while ensuring the material stays in mint condition.
The Stage: Gravity Defying Poses
While the rack is essential for storage, I have found it equally vital as a photography stage. My dolls have the optional "back hole" fitting, which I use in combination with hooks, ropes and pulley hanging from the rack to create realistic, even gravity defying poses that are nearly impossible on a stand alone basis.
As you can see from my behind the scenes photography shots, the Z rack becomes the hidden framework for the entire image. I can hang the doll so she is barely touching the ground or use the back hole to lean her far over a prop, like a bicycle. This creates natural looking joint bends and body contours without risking the doll falling or damaging the skeleton. It's an essential setup for professional, dynamic composition.
